In Summary

General | 1st April 2021
The Birmingham 2022 Festival is excited to receive proposals from artists and cultural organisations based in Birmingham and the West Midlands in response to one of three specific creative briefs.

In Detail

In 2022 the region welcomes the world to Birmingham and the West Midlands with a global sporting event like no other, as we host the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. From the opening and closing ceremonies to the world-class arts festival, the live sites to the Queen’s Baton Relay, Birmingham 2022 will be a region-wide celebration of the power of art and culture to bring people together and make connections across the UK and Commonwealth.

The ambitious arts festival will harness a once in a lifetime opportunity to positively disrupt the region’s cultural sector and inspire lasting change. Audacious, playful and inclusive, over six months it will entertain, engage and embrace at least 2.5million people, setting Birmingham and the West Midlands in a new creative light.

This first group of Open Calls is made up of three specific Creative Briefs, listed below. Each applicant (individual or organisation) may only submit one proposal, in response to one of these three briefs:

1) NATURE Green spaces, urban nature and canals

2) TRAMS Social transport heritage

3) BLACK ART The Black Art Movement in the West Midlands

Each of these commissioned works should reach a minimum audience and/or participant base across live and digital platforms, specified in each individual Creative Brief.

It is particularly interested in projects that will engage the priority groups, namely

  • Children and young people.
  • d/Deaf and disabled people.
  • People and communities that established cultural institutions do not regularly, or easily, engage.
  • People and communities with roots in other Commonwealth nations and territories.

To make a proposal, please download the information below and read it carefully.

Only artists and cultural organisations based in Birmingham and the West Midlands are eligible to make a proposal.

The deadline for Stage 1 proposals is 27 April 2021.

More key dates and contact details for support and queries are included in the download below.

As this is an Open Call it is interested in hearing from new voices and those at all stages of their career. This means you may need some more help and guidance.

There will be a series of surgeries on selected dates in April with representatives of the supporting organisations also present, to answer specific questions from interested artists and organisations.

To book a surgery slot, please contact Kashmire.hawker@birmingham2022.com. For support with your proposal, or questions please contact louisa.davies@birmingham2022.com.
